Buying the equipment is the easy part, where to go, settings, what to look for, there are some great sites offering good sound information and advice to give you a heads up.
John akka the Aussie Bloke Prospecting on YouTube has some very informative videos on  finding gold, both panning and detecting. Mapping, sources and how to use.   
 * Training. I only list here people I have used and found to be reputable or used by friends and checked out and found to offer great service. My view is if you spend thousands of dollars onequipment then a few hundred on training from a reputable operator gives you a great head start.

Gilberton Station is one of several stations about the Forsayth area south of Georgetown in north Queensland were you can detect for gold, Fees apply.    https://www.gilbertongold.

Dells Hole Station and Western Creek Stations are pay to detect and camp  in the Forsayth area. Mt Talbot station, no camping. pay to detect but must stay at the Forsayth Camp Ground to access. It is a nice friendly park with very reasonable rates.

Clermont Queensland

Caravan park in town, Camping allowed at the Black Ridge GPA (a popular spot) No camping allowed on other GPAs.

Isaac Regional Council advice is that as from 25th August 2017, there is no longer a requirement to purchase a Fossicking Kit to access Clermont GPAs. Please call Council office 1300 47 22 27 for any enquiries or see http://bit.ly/2wOaeJW

  • Traverse new GPAs via existing gates and access tracks
  • Take greater care during exploratory drives and whilst prospecting through unfamiliar country eg. use of GPS and/or two way radio to ensure personal safety.
  • Exercise care around old workings and mineshafts
  • Further access tracks to be assessed and constructed over next 12-18 months.
